Demo After Dark

About Alex Mercer — The Loot Goblin

Hi, I‘m Alex.

I grew up in a small town where it rained a lot and the internet came through a phone line. My first console was a hand-me-down PlayStation 1, and my first love was Final Fantasy VII. I didn’t understand half of what was happening in that game — I was seven,my academic performance was very poor back then, which made no sense half the time. But I understood how it felt. The music in the church. The weight of the Buster Sword. The moment Aerith looked up at the sky and I didn‘t know why it made me feel something I couldn’t name.

That was it for me. From that point on, games weren‘t just time-killers. They were my way of understanding the world — and escaping it when it got too heavy.

I played through high school with a second-hand Xbox 360 and a library of cracked PC games I had no business running on my family’s Dell desktop. I stayed up past 3 AM on school nights finishing Mass Effect 2 because I couldn‘t leave my crew behind. I cried at the end of Red Dead Redemption in a way I hadn’t cried about anything real in years. I learned more about consequence and loyalty from The Witcher 3 than from any classroom.

I‘m not a journalist. I’m not a critic. I‘m a designer by trade — I build interfaces for a living, which means I think a lot about how things feel to use. A button that’s satisfying to click. A menu that doesn't make you fight it. A game that respects your time instead of wasting it. These things matter to me in ways I can‘t fully turn off.

I moved to Portland in my mid-twenties. I work from home now, mostly alone, with my cat Pixels curled up somewhere near my keyboard. I’m single in a way that‘s mostly fine but occasionally lonely — and games are often the company I choose on a quiet Tuesday night. That’s when I play the weird stuff. The demos no one‘s talking about. The indie games with 200 reviews and a soul the size of a cathedral.

I started Demo After Dark because I kept finding games I loved and having no one to tell. Not in a sad way — just in a “I need to put this somewhere” way. My friends have kids now. They play Call of Duty for an hour on Sunday and call it a win. I don’t have the same life they do. So I write.

I don‘t write about games I haven’t finished. I don‘t write about genres I don’t genuinely enjoy. I don‘t chase hype or hot takes. I write about the games that earned my evening — and sometimes my whole weekend.

This is my notebook. My recommendation engine with a pulse. A place for late-night thoughts and second-playthrough details and the occasional rant about why a game broke my heart in exactly the right way.

If you’ve ever finished a game and just sat there staring at the credits, not quite ready to leave — this place is for you.
